You Need to Know

  • The Legislative Session begins Monday and is expected to last around fourteen weeks. While that may seem like a long time, things can move very quickly, and legislation can be introduced and passed within a short time period. Read Legislative Link. Get an understanding of how legislation impacts your community. Connect with your elected officials.

  • Prefiled bills began coming in December, new bills will be filed every day, and legislation introduced last Session (the first session of the 90th General Assembly) is still eligible to be acted upon within the process - so we’ve got a lot of work to do! Legislation can be found here: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation

  • Legislators are like you - they’ve got a lot going on. Unlike you, they often don’t have much experience with cities and the services they provide. Reach out to your legislators, connect with them in person, and attend forums in your community. If we know about a forum, we’ll list it at the bottom of this publication each week. We don’t always know about them, and they can be scheduled at any time, so be sure to check each week because the list changes.

  • Save the date! Join us on March 6, 2024 for Local Leaders Day to connect with legislators, hear from key speakers, and share your experience on the impacts of recent legislation. Featuring: Monte Wyatt, CEO AddingZEROS Executive Development and Scott Raecker, Executive Director of The Robert D. and Billie Ray Center at Drake University.

Have a great week, everyone!

The next Legislative Link will be sent on Friday, January 12, to review everything that happens this week.
