The Time Is Now, Final Push!

What’s changed since last week? Your outreach is working! Lawmakers are actively negotiating and we are seeing movement towards a compromise, but key decisions are still unresolved.

YOU MUST CONTACT YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE TODAY TO ASK THEM TO:

  • Support a 2% cap on the CGFL only (not all levies)

  • Restore the Senate property tax framework overwhelmingly supported by both parties

  • Adopt the TIF provisions in the House property tax proposal to support economic development

Legislators are reconsidering the 2% hard cap on all levies because of the outsized & unsustainable impact they will have on Iowa’s smaller, rural communities.

What this means: We are close, but not across the finish line. The next 24-48 hours could determine the final shape of this bill. Contact your House Members as soon as possible again today to ask them to ensure any property tax relief passed this year is sustainable by local governments.

Capping the CGFL at 2% forces cities to rein in spending responsibly and sustainably. Use the League’s Cost Burden Survey and your own budget experience to illustrate increased costs outside of city control like insurance, state-mandated benefits, and material/equipment prices.

FIND YOUR LEGISLATOR AND CALL THEM TODAY!

If you need materials to reference specific League policy solutions beyond the straightforward request above, they are found on the League website: Policy Guidance for Property Tax Reform.

It is vital that you reach out to your legislators and let them know the impact to your city.
